This series is set in the 1980's and centers on a girl, Rachael O'Brien, from Ohio who decides to go to college in North Carolina and all the little problems that happen when she has to adapt to the new people she meets who are "Southern". Of course some of the problems have nothing to do with being Southern and are the usual things we all ran into when going away to college for the first time. I remember being surprised that people and their families could be so different, and the fun of learning to accept their peculiarities and they mine.The author kicks things up a little more than normal by adding some art thieves, drug dealers, family secrets, boyfriend problems, and ecentric relatives which lead to lots of problems and laughs. Poor Rachael, who thought her life was so normal, has to deal with all these as well as studying, trying to loose her viginity, breaking bones, getting run over by her own car, falling off a bunk bed, and getting shot at by a girl in her dorm. I'm glad my college experiences were nothing like that!
I liked this book so much I bought the next one, Toad in the Hole, to see what happened next. The story still isn't done so I hope there will be more books in the series to see if Rachael graduates and starts the art restoration career she wants.

The adventures of Rachel O'Brien are hilarious! Each book contains mystery, travel, stories of friendship and growing pains. I went off to college the same year so the 80s references were really fun to relive.
Like a new bag of potato chips, you start by deciding to read 'just one'. Suddenly you find yourself at the end of the bag-books wanting more. These books are an addiction that won't cause pangs of guilt. The characters and plots make you experience emotions of romance, sympathy and humor. I want more!
I am absolutely in love with this series! I usually don't purchase series books but this one definitely will be!
Keeps your attention wondering what will happen next
Great buy on one of the best series I've read in a long time! Although I'm a much older lady (71) I completely related to the characters in this "first year of college" series. Easy read.....and funny. Looking for the rest of the books in this group. Great mysteries!
